Last night we reached the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula and with it first views of ice bergs. We spent the day calibrating the multibeam system to measure the bottom topography of the ocean. When it is operating, the transmitter emits a repeating click that can be heard on all the lower levels of the ship and that will be with us for the next few weeks. We (the glaciologists) are getting things ready. It will still be several days until we're within reach of the glaciers.
